GEORGE TOWN: More than 100 volunteers from three organisations began a major clean-up at various places hit by last Saturday’s floods including SMK Chung Ling and Han Chiang High School.
Headed by the MCA Crisis Relief Squad, the team was joined by the Malaysia Youth Care Movement and volunteer fire services corps nationwide.
State MCA secretary Tan Heap Seng said the volunteers started at 8.30am until yesterday evening.
“It was completely muddy and we had a tough time cleaning up the sludge and rubbish washed up by the floods.
“We will also clean up Han Chiang High School before proceeding to the old folks’ homes in Jalan P. Ramlee,” he said.
On the mainland, some 100 members from the relief squad went to the ground to help with the clean-up and to distribute supplies to victims.
Penang MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Gui Guat Lye said the squad stopped at 10 places including SMJK Jit Sin and various old folks’ homes to help clean up the premises.
“We distributed an assortment of items such as pails, brooms, mops, detergents, food and drinking water. Pillows were also distributed to victims at the flood relief centre at the central Seberang Prai district land office,” he said.
The squad was accompanied by Penang MCA deputy secretary Datuk Tan Lee Huat and Penang MCA Youth chief Datuk Michael Lee Beng Sen.
