Penang's Han Chiang College receives university college status

PUTRAJAYA: Han Chiang College in Penang is now officially Han Chiang University College of Communication.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh handed over the letter confirming the college's upgrade to a university college to Penang Han Chiang Associated Chinese Schools Association chairman Datuk Seri Ooi Soo Hing at the ministry here on Friday (Nov 3).

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong witnessed the event.

In April 2013, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced that the college would be upgraded to a university college during his visit to Penang.

In December 2014, Han Chiang College received a formal invitation from the Ministry to be upgraded to a university college.

The college then worked towards fulfilling the requirement for this upgrade, including increasing academic staff with PhD background, increasing its paid up capital and improving school facilities.
