Zahid: 'Datuk Seri' who beat up Rela volunteers should surrender to police

KAJANG: Police have identified the "Datuk Seri" who allegedly beat up three Rela members on duty, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Home Minister called on the man to surrender himself to the police as soon as possible.

"I would like to stress that everyone is accountable before the law, regardless of whether you have a title or not. Having a Datukship is not a licence to behave in such a way," he said.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said this at a press conference after officiating the Home Ministry's Family Day at Kajang Prison on Sunday.

The "Datuk Seri” allegedly lost his cool and beat up three Rela members on duty due to a perceived lack of respect shown by them.

The incident occurred on Friday morning near a temple in Ampang because his car was allegedly blocking the road.

The incident recorded on video showed the man beating up the Rela members who did not fight back.

When asked if the members did not know how to defend themselves and if they were not given any self defence training, the Deputy Prime Minister said that it is impossible to train every Rela member in self-defence.

"There are about 3.05mil personnel, it is impossible. And you must understand that these are volunteers, so it is done on a voluntary basis. However, we do offer training to those who are active in performing relevant duties like security," he said.
