PETALING JAYA: US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has arrived in Malaysia, the first senior official of the Trump administration to come here.
He was met on arrival at the Subang RMAF airbase by deputy foreign Minister Reezal Merican and US ambassador Kamala Shirin Lakhdir, said an official.
Tillerson is meeting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tonight at Parliament building.
He will meet deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi tomorrow.
Tillerson's visit is seen as an affirmation of US commitment under President Donald Trump to further strengthen bilateral ties with Malaysia.
The United States was Malaysia’s third largest trading partner last year.
Before his arrival in Kuala Lumpur, Tillerson met his Asean counterparts at the 50th Asean Foreign Ministers meeting in Manila and made a brief stopover in Thailand.
