BAGAN DATUK: The Deputy Prime Minister has advised the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to act professionally and refrain from going against both DAP's constitution and the Societies Act 1966.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was important as the RoS is a body meant to safeguard the interests of any party or organisation's members.

"A party's constitution is their very own foundation, which is why in DAP's case, I have asked RoS to act according to what is stated in their constitution to take care of their delegates and members," he told reporters after opening the Bagan Datuk Umno division meeting here on Saturday.

In response to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang labelling RoS' order for the party to hold fresh elections as "most ridiculous," Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the party had the right to make such a statement.

"But on my end, RoS' action must be done in compliance with my advice, which is to be professional about this, and that is exactly what has been done," he said, referring to RoS director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah's directive to the party to hold fresh central executive committee (CEC) elections.

"Although my ministry is responsible for RoS, I am handing this matter over to them to conduct what I have stressed before, which is to safeguard the interests of the members and act professionally according to what is stipulated in the party's constitution and the Societies Act," he added.

Asked if there was a deadline for DAP to hold fresh elections for its CEC, Dr Ahmad Zahid said there was no time frame for this.
