SHAH ALAM: It is meaningless for members to remain in Umno if they do not support the party in the next general election, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The Umno vice-president said it was a basic requirement for members to give strength to the party upon joining.

“That is a must. If they do not support the party, then they are not truly party members.

“If they do not like the party, then what’s the point of staying?” he told reporters after closing the 71st Umno sports carnival here yesterday.

Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister, called on party leaders to focus on reaching out to youths who are not Umno members.

“This is the challenge we have to face now, especially in the current political situation where many quarters are trying to mess things up.

“The responsibility of reaching out to youths cannot be left solely to the Youth and Puteri wings.

“All of us must play our part,” he said, adding that the party must take an inclusive approach.

He also lauded the organisation of the sports carnival, saying such positive events were far more beneficial than politicking.

“As we celebrate the party’s 71st anniversary, unity is very important.

“Although it is an annual celebration, we are doing it big this year.

“This will send out a clear message that our grassroots members are still with us,” he said.
