Dimsum the place for your Asian fix

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians are excited at the prospect of sinking their teeth into the country’s first home-grown, exclusively Asian video-on-demand service, Star Media Group’s newest digital offering —dimsum.my.

Following its launch on Nov 8, viewers are already queuing up to subscribe, seeing as the content includes Asian dramas and movies from Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

“With dimsum, there is the obvious Korean and Japanese content but we can also explore and watch shows from Asian countries such as Thailand and Singapore,” said Soon Thuan Hong.

The 42-year-old engineer is also pleased that the provided content will include documentaries and kids’ channels.

“It’s good that we can get all these shows on the same platform,” he added.

Mother Shaqeena Zainoren, 39, feels the content is suitable for all age groups and caters to family viewing.

“My 12-year-old daughter enjoys her Korean dramas, and this is going to make her very happy,” she said.

According to Star Online Sdn Bhd chief marketing officer Lam Swee Kim, dimsum.my was the top trend on the Apple App Store.

“This is great, considering that dimsum went live only two nights ago. We have also received many invitations to collaborate with Telcos and retail brands which we will disclose soon,” she said.

The convenience of having content on digital devices and being able to watch it as and when the viewer wants is a boon to subscribers.

“It’s nice that I now have an app just to get my Asian drama fix, especially Korean series,” said Rita Chin, 38, manager of a telco company.

The Star readers can use the promo code stardimsum for a two-month free trial while a free one-month trial period is available to Malaysians.
