PETALING JAYA: Abdul Latif Romly and Ziyad Zolkefli will get an extra RM20,000 as a bonus for breaking world records at the Rio Paralympics.

This is on top of the RM1mil reward they get for their historic feats, under the National Sports Council (NSC) incentive scheme.

These athletes enjoy the same rewards as their able-bodied counterparts thanks to the revised scheme.

Ziyad improved on the world record twice on his way to winning the men’s F20 (intellectual disability) shot putt event on Saturday.

Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Puzi had earlier claimed the nation’s first-ever Paralympic gold medal in the men’s T36 (cerebral palsy) 100m final.

On Sunday, Abdul Latif completed the three-gold haul for Malaysia in track and field. The 19-year-old broke the world record three times on his way to winning the men’s T20 (intellectual disability) long jump final.

For winning gold, the trio will each get a RM5,000 monthly allowance.

AirAsia chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said that all Asean athletes who won medals would be entitled to free flights from the airline – just like their able-bodied counterparts.

Fernandes said that the paralympics had shown him “what determination is all about”.

“Thanks guys and girls for giving all of us the spirit to never give up despite all the obstacles in front of us,” he posted on Instagram yesterday.

He added that all gold medal winners would be entitled to free flights for life while silver and bronze medallists would get free flights for five and three years, respectively.

“For all the sacrifices the Malaysian paralympians have made, all the hardship, the training hours and now the victory, we are pleased to award our heroes with an umrah pilgrimage with their parents,” said DRB-Hicom Bhd group managing director Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar in a statement.
