PUTRAJAYA: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has given its approval in principle for the formation of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

But before making it official, the RoS has asked the party to explain the role and function of its president and chairman.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he was informed by RoS director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah that the green light was given yesterday.

“The decision to approve the party’s application was made by the RoS independently. There was no interference from me as Home Minister nor the Government. Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s application was treated as any other application,” he said after attending the ministry’s monthly gathering.

Sacked deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin filed an application to register PPBM with the RoS on Aug 9.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said although the party constitution stated the role of its chairman was to chair the supreme council meeting and the president to head the presidential council meeting, the RoS wanted further clarification on the matter.

Muhyiddin is expected to be president of the party with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as chairman.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said the RoS would not allow the party to be known or use the acronym “Bersatu”.

“There are six other registered political parties and organisations that have the word Bersatu in their name so it’s a no-go,” he said.
