KOTA KINABALU: Residents here woke up to a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday morning.

Depending on the location, Malaysians will be able to witness the phenomenon starting 7.24am on Wednesday during “first contact” when the moon’s disk will first touch the edge of the sun.

According to the National Planetarium’s website, the partial eclipse will have a maximum overlapping of up to 87% in the southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak.
This will decrease as it moves into the northern regions of the peninsula and Sabah.
A solar eclipse began sweeping across the vast Indonesian archipelago, with hordes of skygazers set to watch the spectacle, which will be marked by parties, prayers and tribal rituals.
The moon began to move between the Earth and sun at 6:19 am (2319 GMT Tuesday), the official Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency said.
