Penang calls off stray dog cullings

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is calling off the culling of stray dogs as no cases of rabies have been reported here since Sept 21, says Lim Guan Eng.

The Chief Minister said the Penang Rabies-Infected Area Order 2015 issued on Sept 15 is revoked effective Friday.

"I was informed by the Department of Veterinary Services that the last case in Penang was on Sept 21 and there is low prevalence of the disease," he said.

"Perlis has identified a total of 20 dogs with rabies as of now, Kedah with 18 dogs while Penang has four dogs despite the high population.

We feel that the situation is under control and hence revocation of the order," he said in a press conference on Friday.

However, he stressed that the vaccination order for all pet dogs was still in operation and advised all owners to do so.
