MCA slams Jamal Yunos over Petaling Street rally threat

KUALA LUMPUR: The red shirt rally organiser who is threatening to hold another rally and possibly riot in Petaling Street here this Saturday should face the law, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) said.

Describing Sungei Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Yunos, who also organised the red shirt rally on Sept 16, as most unbecoming and irresponsible, Dr Wee said Jamal's threat could cause public unrest.

Earlier Wednesday, Jamal issued a threat to the authorities, saying there would be another rally in Petaling Street on Saturday if demands made at the Sept 16 red shirt rally were not met by Friday.

The Sept 16 rally had, among others, alleged the sale of counterfeit goods in Petaling Street, a tourist spot in the capital city and commonly known as Chinatown.

The rally also demanded traders there share a portion of their income with other races and stop their monopoly of the area.

"He (Jamal) has gone overboard, taking the law into his own hands.  How can he threaten the government agencies with a riot?" said Dr Wee.

Dr Wee said Jamal's acts had not only tarnished his own image as a politician but also the image of the country.

He pointed out to Jamal that there were proper avenues to channel complaints to the Government, and issuing a threat or ultimatum that could trigger public unrest was unlawful.
