29 foreign workers held in raids at construction sites

GEORGE TOWN: Police picked up 29 foreign workers for violating immigration laws in four separate raids here.

The operation codenamed Ops Rantau saw raids carried out at four construction sites in Jalan Mount Erskine, Jalan Paya Terubong, Bandar Sri Tanjung Pinang and Jalan Jelutong.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said those detained were 11 Bangladeshis and 18 Myanmar nationals.

He said 197 foreign workers were screened during the operation which began at 11pm on Friday.

“Those detained did not have valid documents.

“They will be investigated under Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” said ACP Mior Faridalathrash.

He added that 45 enforcement personnel involving police, Immigration Department and Civil Defence Department took part in the operation.

In an unrelated development, ACP Mior Faridalathrash said five Thai women, aged between 29 and 37, were nabbed for vice acti-vities at a house in Sungai Nibong at 4pm on Friday.

He said a 34-year-old man said to be a “client” was also picked up during the raid.

The police also seized six condoms and other items during the operation codenamed Ops Noda.

ACP Mior Faridalathrash said they were investigating the case under Section 372B of the Penal Code for soliciting for purpose of prostitution.
