DUKE accident: Victims' family forgives, but demands justice

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the victims of an accident on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) say they have forgiven the drivers of the Myvi vehicles that purportedly caused their loved ones' deaths, but still want to see justice done.

"I have to forgive them and our family forgives them too," said Faizznur Asyraf Husain, the brother of victim Fairuz Nizam Husain.

"But we want justice for our loved ones. We hope that the police will let the punishment fit the crime, not just for the two drivers arrested, but all six," he told The Star.

It was an uncomfortable meeting between the victims' family and three members of the Familia Myvi Club (FMC) who visited the family home in Batu Caves to meet Fairuz's two orphaned daughters and to pay respects to the dead.

The group, represented by Hairul Safuan, also brought along essentials like rice, sugar and coffee for the family and also gave an unspecified amount in cash donation to Nur Firuza Amira, seven, and Nur Firuza Akila, three.

The group told reporters that they have pledged to look after the girls' welfare until they turn 18.

"They came at about 5pm and spoke with us until 7.30pm. They weren't the ones racing on the highway that night, just club members.

"They paid respects to my brother and his family and told their side of the story," he said.

The 25-year-old said that he would now look after Nur Firuza Amira and Nur Firuza Akila.

Fairuz Nizam, his wife Nova Safitri Azhari and their seven-month old daughter Nur Firuza Annisa were killed on Saturday morning when their Pajero was hit by two Myvis.

Police arrested the two drivers over the weekend but released them on bail on Sunday evening. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
