Two family members shot at traffic light junction

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A mother and son were injured after they were shot at when the car they were travelling in stopped at the Jalan Song Ban Keng traffic light junction Tuesday.

State CID Chief Datuk Mazlan Kesah said one of the victims, 21, had just attended a drug case trial at the Bukit Mertajam Court with his mother and was on their way home.

"The suspects, comprising four men on two motorcycles, stopped on either side of the car (driver and passenger), and started firing at them," he told reporters when met at the scene.

He said the shots, which were fired at close range, hit the neck and arm of the woman, 43, while her son, 21, was injured on the left side of his chest.

Mazlan said preliminary investigations found that the son was previously involved in secret society activities and had several criminal records involving drugs and violent crimes.

"Investigations at the scene of the incident revealed that 10 shots were fired, all of which hit the Subaru Impreza car that the victims were in, and police suspect the motive for the attack was revenge," he said.

Mazlan said police would obtain close circuit television (CCTV) recordings from the nearby areas for further investigation and urged the public with any information to assist in the investigation.

He said both victims had been sent to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for treatment and their conditions were reported to be stable.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. - Bernama
