Wan Azizah: ‘Anwar's sleep affected by mosquitoes’

KUALA LUMPUR: "Anwar's sleep is affected by mosquitoes," Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said this over the latest developments concerning her husband who is imprisoned at the Sungai Buloh prison.

Wan Azizah also said she had made a request to the prison authorities to improve the toilet facilities and provide a two-inch thick mattress for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).

Anwar has complained that he did not enjoy “basic facilities” in his prison cell, thus aggravating his spine condition.

"The prison authorities have assured us (on this) but we are still waiting for them to keep their word to provide a two-inch thick mattress and solve the problem of the mosquitoes as well as the squat toilet," she told reporters outside the High Court here. 

Wan Azizah was attending Anwar’s RM100mil defamation suit against Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman over the latter's statement at a media conference in Washington DC in May 2009. 

At the end of the proceedings on Tuesday after giving his testimony, Anwar said: "Thank you, your honour, I will now return to Sungai Buloh." 

Anwar, 67, dressed in a white shirt and black pants, arrived at the Court Complex here at 7.45am and was taken without handcuffs to the courtroom, accompanied by officers from the Sungai Buloh prison as well as court police. 

Before the proceedings began, family members and several Opposition leaders including Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali, were allowed to meet Anwar in the witness room. 

Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after being found guilty of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008. -- BERNAMA
