Weak quake hits Sabah's east coast

KOTA KINABALU: Minor tremors hit several Sabah east coast districts Friday morning but there were no reports of damage.

The three-second tremor was felt in Kunak, Lahad Datu and Tawau districts around 9.15am.

Sabah Meteorological Department director Abdul Malek Tussin said the 3.9 Ritcher scale land quake was a weak and harmless one.

"We received reports of the incident around 9.15am, and no damage has been reported from the quake so far," he said.

Abdul Malek said they were monitoring the situation.

In Kunak, district police chief Supt M Radzali Mahmud said he was in the office doing some paperwork when he felt a tremor.

"It was past 9am and suddenly I felt myself shaking. It was just a two-to-three second quake and luckily it was weak," he said.

Mild tremors have been felt several times a year in Sabah.
