Parents of missing boy held

Missing boy Min You's father Low Yee Sheng and mother Yong Siou Yee being arrested by police for remand at the Karamunsing police station in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.

KOTA KINABALU: The case of the missing three-year-old Low Min You has taken a twist with the arrest of his parents.

Low Yee Sheng, 31, and his wife Yong Siew Yee, 26, were detained when they turned up at the Kota Kinabalu district police station in Karamunsing on Wednesday evening.

Low, a closed-circuit television camera installer, and Yong had earlier been asked to go to the police station.

They were produced yesterday morning before Senior Assistant Registrar Danny Buaya at a magistrate’s court here, where the investigating officer Insp Shreethran Balan applied to remand the couple for seven days.

Counsel Ram Singh, however, objected, saying that Low and Yong still had another child to look after at home.

Buaya subsequently fixed the remand for three days until Saturday.

It is believed that the parents were arrested following contradicting statements that they had given to the police.

The arrest of Min You’s parents came a day after Kota Kinabalu police chief Assist Comm Jauteh Dikun said he was puzzled over the lack of information about the boy’s whereabouts.

Min You was reported missing on May 9 after his father left him in the car while he went to the toilet at a petrol station in Kampung Air here at about 5.50am.

The vehicle was found several hours later at Signal Hill, some 2.5km from where it was taken, but Min You was not in it.

Meanwhile, the police are advising the public not to spread rumours and instead alert the authorities immediately if they have information on Min You’s whereabouts.

Keningau district police chief Deputy Supt Robert Salisip said this following a widely circulated message via social media and word of mouth that Min You had been sighted with a couple in the district.

There were also other messages claiming that the child was at a hotel in Keningau.

Police officials had checked on this information but found nothing.
