PETALING JAYA: MCA will use all means possible, including legal action, to prevent PAS from implementing hudud, says party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
“MCA will not only speak out against hudud but oppose it in all aspects, including taking legal action,” he said after launching the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia’s Dharma Walk 2014.
He said having separate laws for criminal offences would lead to confusion and disrupt national unity.
Liow stressed that the onus to stop PAS from implementing hudud rested on the Islamist party’s coalition partners in Pakatan Rakyat.
“DAP and PKR should stop PAS from doing this because they are in the same coalition. They promoted PAS during the general election and now PAS is insisting on implementing hudud,” he said.
Urging both the DAP and PKR to talk to PAS, he said: “Our position is very clear. Everyone knows MCA has always been against the implementation of hudud.”
He said that while MCA was open to working with DAP, the party should first apologise and explain itself.
Later in Klang, Liow held a dialogue session with more than 100 leaders from Selangor Chinese guilds, organisations and associations to gather their views and feedback on Chinese-related issues.
He said the community had been supportive of the party’s transformation plan and its move in preventing PAS from tabling its hudud Bill for Kelantan.
“They took part in our signature campaign to oppose hudud and also helped us gather signatures,” he said.
Last month, MCA had launched a campaign to collect one million signatures opposing the implementation of hudud laws in Kelantan.
The campaign aimed to enable non-Muslims to express their disagreement over the proposal by the PAS-led state government.
Once the target has been achieved, it would be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Prime Minister.
In Ipoh, MCA Wanita chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie said the movement would help collect one million signatures from people nationwide in the “Say No to Hudud” campaign.
She said the signature drive would be launched in Perak on May 10 and hoped that up to 150,000 signatures would be collected.
“We also hope to get support from other women’s groups, NGOs and Chinese associations in Perak in our bid to stop PAS from tabling a Bill in Parliament to impose hudud in Kelantan,” she said here yesterday.
Heng said those interested in signing up could get the forms from the local MCA division or branches. The closing date for the submission of forms is May 30.
