SUNGAI PETANI: The Kedah government announced Thaipusam will be a special holiday (cuti peristiwa) for the state this year.
State Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, when announcing it this afternoon, said the Yang diPertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, who is also the Sultan of Kedah, consented to make the celebration a special holiday for Kedah.
He said since Thaipusam falls on Friday, Jan 17, which is the weekend in Kedah, there will not be a replacement holiday on Monday.
Sunday, Jan 19, is also a public holiday in conjunction with the Sultan of Kedah's birthday.
The Indian population in the state is about 300,000.
