Najib: Umno has always been fair to all

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wrapped up the Umno General Assembly 2013 with a declaration that the party has always been fair to all.

"We want everyone to be with us, the Chinese, the Indians the Kadazans and the rest.

"However, the helm of leadership must remain with Umno to ensure fairness to all. Under others, there is no assurance that Malays can get fairness," said the Umno president in his winding-up speech Saturday.

Najib stressed that Umno had always been considerate and would only implement what it thought was the best for the country's development and national unity.

He said even during the implementation of the New Economic Policy, Umno had never denied the rights nor did anything that was detrimental to the economic growth of other races.

"Do not accuse us of being racist, of being this and that. We have to do this because this is our right," he said, adding that he fully understood the message sent by the delegates that the party had to try its best to fulfill the Bumiputra Economic Agenda.

Najib also announced that flood victims in affected states will be given RM500 in financial aid.

He said any assistance they received would help, and urged other banks to follow Maybank's lead in offering temporary deferment of loan payments.

"Maybank has come forward to give aid to victims and I urge all other banks to come forward and do the same.

"They are all in dire need and we should all come together to alleviate their suffering," he said.

Najib also said that he would work towards improving English education locally.

"The children of our nation should all be well-versed in English and make us proud wherever they go " he added.

Najib also said that the party was on the right track in promoting Islamic values.

"From this assembly we can conclude that this party defends the right and practices of Islam and will never give up. We are on the right track in turning us into an exemplary Islamic nation.

"Islam will be the driving force of the party and nation," he said.

He further said that the economic standing of Bumiputeras was of utmost importance.

"All GLCs (government-linked companies) will be monitored to keep track of their contribution to the upkeep and enhancement of the Malay economy.

Najib also said it was essential for members to continue to be relevant.

"We need our members to abide by the constitution of the party and do their best at all times, and not just during general elections.

"It essential for us to nurture the next generation of leaders to continue our dreams and aspirations," he added.
