PETALING JAYA: An orchestra of chefs playing classical music kick started the 12th Malaysia International Gourmet Festival 2012 at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall.
MIGF organising chairman Datuk Steve Day said the purpose of the festival was to pay tribute to the roots of authentic cuisine.
“People simply love the classics and nothing beats mama's cooking,” he said.
The theme for this year's festival, which runs from Oct 1 to 31, is: “Classical Chefs a Symphony of Great Cuisines”.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said her ministry was pleased to support this event for the 12th consecutive year and that it was important for Malaysia to set itself up as a platform for international cuisine.
“Food is a part of our culture, whether street or gourmet food, and we need to build on our gourmet food,” she said, stating that gourmet food was an important component of Luxury Malaysia, which is part of the ministry's effort to turn the country into a top notch duty-free shopping destination while drawing high-end visitors.
“Usually tourists have to visit individual restaurants when trying out gourmet food, but a gathering like this brings all types of gourmet food together.
“More days and venues will be added to future tasting previews if this year's Taste MIGF turns out to be a success,” she added.
The inaugural Taste MIGF is a special preview event where tourists and the general public can buy Taste Tokens to sample food from some of Malaysia's best restaurants under one roof at the Theatre of Cuisines.
