GEORGE TOWN: Local syndicates with foreign connections are allegedly felling the highly-valued gaharu (agarwood) trees illegally in the rainforest near the Penang Botanic Gardens here and in other areas.
Believed to be armed with dangerous weapons, these syndicates with links in Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam, which also operates in Seberang Prai, are illegally felling the trees rampantly in various areas on Penang island.
