Former DAP MP Fan Yew Teng dies in Bangkok hospital

PETALING JAYA: Fan Yew Teng, activist and former DAP member of parliament, passed away at the Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok Tuesday after battling cancer.

His funeral will be held in Bangkok on Wednesday, said his brother Farn Seong Than who was a former DAP Sungai Besi MP.

Fan's wife works for the United Nations office in Bangkok and Fan had been living there for the past year to be close to his wife and twin daughters.

Fan, a former DAP deputy secretary-general, was MP for Menglembu in Perak.

He was disqualified as MP in 1975 after being fined RM2,000, in default of six months' jail, for publishing a seditious speech by the then Penang DAP chairman, Dr Ooi Kee Saik, in The Rocket, the party's newsletter.

Fan had to vacate his Menglembu parliamentary seat to make way for a by-election. Barisan Nasional did not field a candidate in the ensuing by-election.

Farn said that even though his brother had quit the party for 20 years, he had remained close to the party leadership.
