Najib and Manmohan launch Little India

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh launched Little India in Brick­fields, marking the deep ties between two countries.

Malaysia and India have “contemporised” historical ties for greater economic and government-to-government collaboration, Najib said.

He said the two nations that shared centuries-old ties could reach even greater heights now.

Manmohan’s willingness to launch the revitalised Little India in Brick­fields signified a desire to touch the hearts of people living in Malay­sia, he said at the opening ceremony.

Expressing gratitude, Najib said comprehensive economic cooperation would take the two countries to greater heights.

Najib also said the sprucing up of Brickfields was part of an urban project for greater Kuala Lumpur.

“It is part of our initiative to create a dynamic, vibrant, progressive and cosmopolitan city.”

He said the revitalisation of Little India, which stretches from Jalan Travers to Jalan Tun Sambanthan, was more than symbolic.

“It’s a new beginning for Brick­fields. It will be a new Brickfields that will showcase to the world the Little India in Malaysia,” he added.

Manmohan viewed Little India as a tribute to the community here.

“The Malaysian Government’s decision to dedicate this area of Brickfields as Little India is a tribute to the contribution of all Malaysians of Indian origin,” he said.
