Sin Chew apologises to Foo

PETALING JAYA: Sin Chew Daily has apologised to the Federation of Hainan Association Malaysia president Datuk Foo Sae Heng for misquoting him in a news article published on Thursday.

The daily’s executive editor, Tai Siew Kim, apologised to Foo on behalf of the newspaper yesterday.

“We sincerely apologise to Mr Foo for any trouble caused by the article,” she said.

On Thursday, Foo refuted the article which claimed that he had said the association was considering withdrawing an exemplary service award given to MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

Foo, who had attended a dinner organised by the association in Seremban on Tuesday, said that he was merely responding to questions by members who wanted to know if the federation was prepared to withdraw the Hainanese Exemplary Service Award given to its recipients.

Foo said that he had replied that the move could be considered but the final decision rested with the federation’s central committee.

Foo said “at no point was Ong’s name mentioned. But the newspaper named him in the heading of the story the next day.”

Reporter Ng Chi Yan also apologised to Foo for her misinterpretation of his statement.
