Brunei Ruler divorces second wife, revokes titles

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has divorced his second wife, former flight stewardess Mariam Abdul Aziz (pic), and ordered all her royal titles withdrawn.

A royal announcement on state-run television late on Sunday did not give reasons for the divorce, although there have been rumours about a rift in the marriage.

The announcement said the 56-year-old Sultan pronounced talak satu – one of three levels of declaring a divorce in Islam – on his 46-year-old wife, with whom he has four children.

Under this level of divorce, the husband can withdraw the divorce within three months and 10 days of his pronouncement.

Sultan Hassanal married Mariam in 1981. Educated in Brunei, she was a flight attendant with Royal Brunei Airlines for six years before marrying the sultan. – AFP
