Three masked men rob shop of RM20,000 worth of mobile phones in Sungai Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: A handphone shop at the Cendana Industrial Zone was robbed of RM20,000 worth of smartphones after the shop was broken into by three masked men.

The shop said on its Facebook page that the break-in occurred at 4am and the security guard on duty was threatened with a machete by one of the suspects.

"No cash was stolen during the incident and luckily our security guard was not harmed," it said.

The shop added that a police report will be lodged over the incident and urged members of the public to report if anyone attempts to sell cheap handphones.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Hanyan Ramlan said police are seeking three masked men in connection with the incident. He confirmed that losses from the break-in were about RM20,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
