PREPARING TOMORROW’S LEADERS FOR SUPPLY CHAIN VOLATILITY

At the Asia School of Business (pic), global analytical rigour meets deep insight into emerging markets, with real-world application at the heart of its research ecosystem.

GLOBAL supply chains are no longer operating in an era of predictable efficiency.

What was once viewed as temporary turbulence – from geopolitical tensions, climate disruptions, rapid technological advances, shifting consumer trends driven by TikTok and the influencer economy and fluctuating commodity costs – has evolved into a permanent operational reality.

As companies attempt to adapt in this turbulent environment, higher education institutions face a crucial mandate: preparing the next generation of business leaders to navigate continuous market volatility.

The need for operational resilience

Historically, business education and corporate practices relied heavily on optimising processes and just-in-time frameworks designed to minimise inventory costs and maximise efficiency under stable conditions.

Prolonged supply chain bottlenecks erode product inventories, disappoint customers and affect operational margins, while disruptions to the flow of critical goods threaten societal stability and national security.

This highlights an urgent need for business graduates who can manage uncertainty and build capacity to foster strategic operational agility.

Operations can no longer be viewed through a purely functional lens. Future leaders must cultivate operational vigilance – anticipating disruptions through scenario planning and data-driven insights rather than merely reacting after a bottleneck occurs.

Achieving this requires flexible, risk-aware supply chain networks that allow firms to pivot to alternative suppliers and maintain continuity without incurring prohibitive costs.

Turning theory into action through real-world immersion

Progressive business education becomes a catalyst for career transformation.

Established in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management, the Asia School of Business (ASB) operates on a distinct ethos: Global Inquiry, Local Heart.

Positioned at the dynamic centre of Asean’s growth story, ASB combines Western analytical rigour with deep emerging market immersion.

Rather than relying solely on traditional classroom case studies, ASB’s flagship Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive MBA (EMBA) programmes infuse action learning as a core pillar, accounting for roughly a third of the entire curriculum. Through components like the Integrated Management Lab (IML) and Mindset Lab, students resolve complex operational challenges for organisations across Asia, developing adaptive resilience, problem-solving and cross-cultural agility.

This model is further enhanced by an intensive immersion programme at MIT Sloan in Boston, alongside global Post-MBA Pathways with elite institutions such as Yale, Oxford and Cornell.

Bridging academic rigour with regional impact

The commitment to real-world application is anchored in ASB’s robust research ecosystem, comprising specialised bodies such as the Centre of Technology, Strategy & Sustainability (CTSS) and Centre for Sustainable Small-owners (CSS).

Validating this practical approach, ASB’s Executive Education was recently ranked among the top 100 globally in the prestigious Financial Times (FT) Executive Education Custom Rankings, becoming the first business school in Malaysia to enter this ranking.

A key example of the faculty expertise driving this regional impact is ASB’s operations and supply chain management Prof Shardul Phadnis, who has spent years in advanced scenario planning through research and industry projects across the United States, Europe and Asia.

His work translates into real-world impact, from leading the ongoing Ops21 scenario planning initiative with a major multinational corporation in Malaysia to conducting specialised masterclasses, including an eight-session course for MBA students and industry leaders through ASB’s Agile Continuous Education (ACE) micro-credential programme.

Prof Shardul serves as associate editor for Futures and Foresight Science and was recently appointed to the Editorial Review Board of the California Management Review, published by the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.

Such top-tier academic contributions reinforce ASB’s mission to serve as a premier gateway for thought leadership, ensuring graduates possess the strategic vision and practical tools to build resilient operational networks.
