New generation of legal graduates at Reading Law School

THE School of Law at the University of Reading Malaysia campus saw the graduation of its inaugural batch of students recently in August.

As a branch campus, the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree is the same as that offered at the University of Reading’s UK campus.

The School of Law at Reading University is known for its leading research in areas such as commercial and international law, and the law degree is ranked Top 25 in the UK for course satisfaction according to the Guardian League Table 2022.

Provost Prof Wing Lam congratulated the first batch of graduates on their achievement: “I’m extremely proud of our first graduating cohort of law students. They have a real passion for law and have set a high bar in terms of their academic excellence, dedication, soft skills and professionalism.”

The law programme was first launched at the Malaysian campus in September 2019. Since then, the Law school has gone from strength to strength. The programme is fully-accredited by MQA and also qualifies graduates to pursue the Bar Practice Course (BPC) recognised by the Bar Standards Board UK with a view to qualifying as a barrister.

The University of Reading Malaysia campus, located in EduCity Iskandar of Johor, offers law students some of the best facilities to be found.

The state-of-the-art campus is a spacious, modern facility that houses IT-enabled classrooms, lecture theatre, moot court, legal clinic, learning resource centre and student social areas all conveniently under one roof.

As part of EduCity, students also enjoy excellent recreational facilities that include an Olympic-size swimming pool, running track, indoor stadium, fitness centre, music studio and a student hub.

Future-proof graduates

Students on the programme receive the perfect balance of academic learning and practical experience.

“The University of Reading is known for producing law graduates who are well-rounded and highly-adaptable, and therefore able to rise quickly in their chosen legal or business career,” said Reading School of Law head Prof James Devenney.

In a dynamic and constantly changing world, the emphasis is on developing skills that will future-proof graduates.

Assoc Prof Anne Chrishanthani Vergis, UoRM Law head said: “The Reading Law programme places great importance on applied learning, aiming to develop the students' skills and experience to help them graduate with the best possible prospects.”

Exceptional learning experience

Class sizes on the programme are kept low to enable each student to receive personal attention and support for their development. As well as the highly experienced academic team, students benefit from the wisdom and knowledge of esteemed legal practitioners that are invited as part of industry engagement.
