SUNWAY University is now proudly positioned alongside some of the world’s leading names in education, ranked for the first time within the top universities in the world, according to the latest annual QS World University Rankings.

The QS World University Rankings are the most-widely read and referred platform for university rankings in the world and the success of Sunway University globally enhances the worldwide reputation of education in Malaysia.

Overseeing this outstanding contribution to education in Malaysia and the ongoing rise of Sunway University is vice-chancellor, Professor Graeme Wilkinson.

“I am delighted with the news that Sunway University has now been placed in the QS World University Ranking. Considering the limited years of our existence, this is an unprecedented achievement and recognition for a fledgling university in Malaysia," said Prof Wilkinson.

The QS World University Ranking covers only the top 1,000 universities in the world, a small proportion of the total number of higher education institutions globally.

“Naturally, while we are delighted for all involved, we will continue to aim higher and continue to provide a level of education in Malaysia that truly is a class above,” he added, explaining that the challenge is to move forward from the new milestone towards greater heights.

“I am confident we shall do so in due course, given our strong investments in research, outstanding people, and key international partnerships.”

The achievement was more remarkable considering that Sunway University is a leading not-for-profit non-government linked private university committed to the pursuit of educational excellence through scholarship, research and enterprise.

Sunway University’s campus boasts a FIFA-certified football field, a library with a Harvard collection, state-of-the-art auditoriums and more.

The university also achieved the top QS rating score of five stars for the individual categories: teaching, facilities, employability, social responsibility and inclusiveness.

Complementing only the best local academics with outstanding academics and distinguished professors from across the globe, has enabled the university to deliver the finest quality in its teaching.

Meanwhile, its five-star rating for employability is a testament that active student involvement and positive engagement in job-focused programmes help them develop their passions and transfer their experiences into rewarding careers.

The modern 82,000 sqm campus – which boasts a FIFA-certified football field, a library with a Harvard collection, state-of-the-art auditoriums, outstanding laboratories and teaching facilities – is widely recognised as one of the best in the country.

“I am truly happy that the university has taken this bold step to participate in the QS World University Ranking and immediately got placed among the top institutions in the world. I am glad we are now recognised on the world map as a young university, seriously intent on collaborating with the finest to give our best to the world," said Sunway Education Group CEO, Dr Elizabeth Lee, who was delighted when she heard the news.

She added that the QS five-star rating for Sunway University is a reflection of the outstanding dedication of the staff and team of academics.

“I would like to take this moment to acknowledge that none of this would have been possible without the continuous support of parents and students."

On the international front, Sunway University partners with Lancaster University and Le Cordon Bleu to validate and accredit relevant programmes. Lancaster University is ranked in the top 1% of universities globally while Le Cordon Bleu is the world’s most renowned institution for culinary arts.

“Lancaster University is delighted to see our partner Sunway University enter the world league tables for the first time. This is a signal of the progress Sunway is making in becoming a world class institution”, said Lancaster University vice-chancellor Professor Mark E Smith.

CEO and president of Le Cordon Bleu, André Cointreau, in his message to Sunway said, “Le Cordon Bleu is most thrilled that Sunway University, our partner in Malaysia for more than seven years, has been ranked as one of the World’s Top institutions. Congratulations to Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah and his team.”

The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation’s scholarships and bursaries demonstrate the university’s commitment to extend access to higher education and inclusivity for those from low-income and challenging backgrounds.

The opening of the first ever Jeffrey Sachs Centre for Sustainable Development in Asia by the Prime Minister was a huge compliment to Sunway and paid tribute to the work that was being done in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In 2018, the Jeffrey Sachs Centre for Sustainable Development successfully launched a dedicated programme developed around the 17 goals, allowing Malaysians the chance to pursue their passion for the environment with a Masters in Sustainable Development Management.

The university also enjoys a Tier 5 “Excellent” rating in the national Setara quality assessment – which has been consistently maintained since 2009.

These accolades prove Sunway University’s resolve in ensuring high-quality teaching, research and service excellence by offering a collaborative learning environment for both academics and students alike, justifying its position among the top universities in the world.

Sunway also proved its ability to forge successful relationships with the world’s global brands in education which include collaborations with Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University and UC Berkeley.
