THE team from Multimedia University (MMU) showed that they had the most “energy efficient innovation” when their Intelligent Cooling System beat other entries in the Green the World challenge, a competition for tertiary level students in the country.
Team Pioneer’s grand prize included a trip to the Schneider Electric factory in Bangkok.
The company had initiated and sponsored the competition. It also included a bursary of RM15,000 together with a trophy and certificates from the company.
The other winners were a team from University Sains Malaysia (USM), and Universiti Malaya (UM). The teams also received bursaries valued at RM10,000 and RM5,000, respectively at a ceremony.
Also present were Energy Green Technology and Water Ministry’s senior under-secretary for green technology Mohd Rosli Abdullah, the company’s Schneider South East Asia Zone director Stuart Thorogood and its country director for Malaysia Mow Li Li.
The models that the teams came up with were prototypes for projects that ranged from air conditioning systems, cooling systems, lighting systems, switch board power management systems to water pumping systems.
The 10 shortlisted teams were selected from among 66 teams from 11 local universities that had registered for the challenge.
There were three teams from USM, two teams each from UM and University College Sedaya International, and one team from MMU, Inti Nilai, and Universiti Tunku Abdul Raman.
All the 10 teams submitted a technical report, which made up 60% of the final result.
The report among other factors took into consideration the design, persuasivenes, cost- and energy-effectiveness and return on investment.
The balance 40% was awarded based on the final prototype and presentation.
Schneider recently launched “Energy University”, an online education provider which offers the basics to implement successful energy efficient solutions for various applications.
