NiE a great learning tool

SMK SRI Hartamas student Filzah Zarifah Idris believes strongly in the importance of reading the newspaper every day.

Hence, she was very happy when she learned that her school was going to get free copies of The Star for the next few months, thanks to The Otomotif College (TOC).

“For me, the Internet is a tool to look for specific information. But if I want to know what's happening in my country, I will certainly read the newspaper,” she said.

The Form Five student added that she enjoyed flipping through the paper and looking at the photographs.

Filzah, 17, was among the students who turned up at the Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) school sponsorship programme held recently at TOC, Selangor.

The sponsorship enables 24 schools from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to receive 10,000 copies of The Star between March and November. TOC also sponsors papers for 16 other schools in the country.

SMK Tinggi Setapak Form Four student, S. Nevin, concurred with Filzah, saying that the newspaper is a great tool for learning.

“It will help you understand current issues, both locally and globally,” he said.

TOC principal Mohd Aripin Harun said that students will benefit if the newspaper is made accessible to more schools.

“This sponsorship will encourage students to explore the world beyond textbooks. We want to contribute to their learning process,” he said.

Mohd Aripin added that the sponsorship is also part of the company's commitment in corporate social responsibility.

After the sponsorship ceremony, the students were taken on a tour of the campus and introduced to the various automotive programmes offered by the college.

Also present were Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd senior circulation manager, G. Damodaran, and circulation manager Jimmy Poey.

The other schools in KL which will benefit from the sponsorship include SMK Cochrane, SMK Vivekananda, SMK Kepong Baru, SM Confucian, SMK Taman Tun Dr Ismail, SMK Taman Connaught, SMK Bukit Bandaraya, Sekolah Sri Garden, SMK Victoria, SMK Sinar Bintang, SMK Cheras and SMK St John.

Meanwhile, the schools in Selangor which will benefit from the sponsorship are SMK Hill Crest, SMK Sultan Abdul Samad, Catholic High School, SMK Perimbun, SMK Taman Sea, SMK La Salle, SMK ACS, SMK Teknik Shah Alam, SM Teknik Kuala Lumpur and SM Teknik Sg Buloh.
