THE gutsy play by mixed doubles social pair Chong Jian Sheng and Carmen Lau in the Modesliga Social Badminton League 2014 earn their team VCS Flexpro Zeal the first point against Team 16.
The duo refused to let their opponent’s Mohd Khairul Anuar and Yvonne Kwan get ahead by keeping the pressure on with hard smashes and low drop shots before to sealing the match 21-16, 21-19.
Speaking of their performance after the match, Jian Sheng said he felt happy to deliver the first point for the team but added that their opponents had drained them of their energy in tough battle.
“I made quite a number of mistakes that landed us in a spot of bother, but my partner and I worked together to eventually win the match.
“We decided not to flick the shuttlecock to the back of the court to avoid being smashed upon,” he said.
Team Flexpro continued with their momentum as veteran pair Ding Chai Thong and Johnson Phoo sailed through the second match with a comfortable 21-12, 21-16 win.
In the junior veterans doubles, Flexpro Zeal’s Kenny Saw and Tan Chee Feng crashed to a 12-21 defeat against Tan Poh Kar and Yeng Yew Kong in the first game, but managed to pull off a hard fought 21-18 win in the second game and force a rubber set. Both teams then battled neck-and-neck before Team 16 won 21-23.
Each team took one point in the men’s doubles as Flexpro won 3-2 to claim the league championship title.
Meanwhile, in the semi-pro Flexpro Modesliga Badminton League, Team Racqueteer fought hard for a 3-2 win.
The Racqueteer mixed doubles lost 21-16, 21-14 to Team Flexpro Zeal but the former’s veteran doubles saw them bounce back with a 21-17, 16-21, 21-14 win to draw level 1-1.
