SIBU: Kuching Division emerged as overall champion at the three-day State level Primary and Secondary Schools English Language Carnival.
Placed second and third respectively were Miri and Sibu divisions.
A total of 11 divisions took part.
The competition for the primary school section was divided into five categories.
They were action song, scrabble, poetry recitation, story telling and public speaking.
The secondary school section had only public speaking to contest for.
The winners of each section earned the right to represent the state at the national level competition to be held in Pahang from Oct 18 to 20.
The champions were SJK Chung Hua No.6, Kuching (action song and public speaking), SK Green Road, Kuching (scrabble), SJK Tiong Hin, Sibu (poetry recitation), and SJK Chung Hua No. 1, Kuching (story telling).
The public speaking category for secondary school was won by SMK Columba, Miri.
At the closing ceremony, Human Resource Development of Sibu Education Department head Lim Chun Leng said the competition, organised by the Education Ministry, was aimed at encouraging the usage of English among the pupils.
It was also to build confidence and skills with the language.
“We sincerely hope that this competition will encourage pupils to be confident and use the English language more in their daily life,” Lim said.
