SS17 residents patrol on Malaysia Day

Keeping crime at bay: SS17 RT's first patrol and soft launch in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations saw an encouraging turnout, volunteers were divided into teams and patrolled SS17. SEPT 15, 2014.

THE SS17 Rukun Tetangga (RT) kick-started their first residents patrol timed in conjunction with Hari Malaysia.

There were more than 50 residents, including 32 registered members who participated in the voluntary patrol scheme.

Rukun Tetangga members from USJ 3/4, USJ 13, PJS 9 and residents from USJ 2 and USJ 6 also turned up to show their support. There were also members from the Volunteer Patrol Unit, consisting of senior citizens and retirees who drove their cars to patrol the streets with the police.

Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh, Subang Jaya Municipal councillors Ken Chia and Pooi Weng Keong. also participated in the event.

As it was on the eve of Malaysia Day, participants sang Negaraku before they started their patrol.

Yeoh allocated RM3,000 to help kick-start the SS17 RT’s patrolling unit.

“It is good to see a mixed crowd and such an encouraging turnout, hopefully the number of participants will not decrease in months to come,” she said.

SS17 RT chairman Theresa Ratnam Thong said the RT was formed in April and residents had been looking forward to the patrol unit.

“This is the only RT that has all in one place. SS17 residents are automatically a member of the RT as there are no other RTs or resident associations in SS17,” she said.

She added the RT had requested for RM6,000 of funds from the Selangor state National Unity and Integration Department but had yet to receive it.
