Ramen blogger enjoying a taste of Penang

HAVING tasted and reviewed almost 1,500 types of instant noodles from the around the world, ‘The Ramen Rater’ blogger Hans Lienesch is now in Malaysia to experience the spice and thrills of local food and culture.

The 39-year-old guru on instant noodles from Seattle, United States, will be in Penang for five days and two days in Langkawi to experience Malaysian food to further understand the local food culture and look for more instant noodles for reviews.

“The curries here are so rich in flavour, and they’re everywhere. There are also so many types of fusion food,” he said in an interview at a hotel in Penang on Wednesday.

Lienesch explained that instant noodles had special characteristics based on their region’s demand.

“Instant noodles in Korea tend to be thick and spicy, while the Japanese and Chinese ones tend to be saltier and beef-based respectively.

In his Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time blog post, two of the entries were from Malaysia, the Mammee Chef Curry Laksa flavour in seventh place and MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle in top spot.

“I’ve tried a few of Penang’s freshly cooked white curry noodles sold at stalls but none of them are as satisfying as the instant version.

“The broth of MyKuali’s is much thicker. Not only that, I can also bring it home and tweak it to my liking by adding in coconut milk, tofu puffs, fish balls and seafood such as prawns.

“But for my reviews, I strictly follow the instructions on the noodle packet to produce a fair review.”

Lienesch’s obsession with instant noodles started when he was a child and his mother would make fried instant noodles topped with an egg.

It was only when he was about 12 that he discovered the endless array instant noodles from all over the world during a visit to a grocery store.

“In 2002, I decided to start a blog rating instant noodles which I get from all sorts of places. My blog readers or even instant noodles manufacturers would sometimes send me products to review.”

Asked if he would ever create his own brand of instant noodles, Lienesch said he had no such plans as he only enjoyed eating them.

“As of Sept 27, I have already reviewed 1,493 types of instant noodles.”

He and his wife arrived in Penang by flight on Sunday, and will visit Langkawi before returning home.

His trip is sponsored by Sky Thomas Food Industries, the maker of MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodles.

The company’s marketing manager Thomas Tang said the trip was solely for Lienesch to explore and understand the local cuisine and not to promote the company’s products.

Lienesch is also looking forward for the launching of ‘The Ramen Rater’ app by end of this month.
