THE Taman Beringin waste transfer station in Kepong, which has only two functioning compactors, currently will need at least three such machines to handle its daily 2,500 tonnes of household waste.
A spokesman for the National Solid Waste Management Department said the third compactor would be replaced next month, adding that the department planned to replace all the compactors by August next year.
He added that the contractor engaged to fix the compactors, Turbing Technique (M) Sdn Bhd, was appointed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall on April 28 this year.
The damage to the two compactors was attributed to the previous operator’s mismanagement and non-compliance with the standard operating procedure.
The previous operator, Umpan Jaya Sdn Bhd, had left the facility crippled with all four of its compactors broken down.
On nearby residents’ complaints that the bulk waste section of the transfer station was used to dump household waste, he agreed, adding that it was only a temporary measure.
“The household waste is directed to the bulk waste section to prevent illegal dumping of waste by the roadside, namely MRR2, and traffic congestion there due to the garbage.
“The current operator, Alam Flora, has ensured that the household waste in this area is sent to the Bukit Tagar sanitary landfill on the same day it is brought in,” said the spokesman.
The spokesperson added that although there was no leachate collection system in the bulk waste area, all compactors went through the washing bay first to dispose the leachate.
“The leachate is collected from the bay and channelled to the leachate treatment plant before being released into Sungai Jinjang,” said the spokesman.
Alam Flora had been appointed to run the station on a month-to-month basis for now and plans to draw a five-year contract with the company is in the pipeline.
