THE big guns of Chinese Recreation Club (CRC) and Timuran SC have rightfully put themselves in line for the prestigious Lee Ewe Boo Cup as the annual Penang Chinese FA Senior League season heads for an exciting finale on Sunday.
With both teams having their own reasons to troop out a winner, the match at the State Stadium in Batu Kawan is expected to draw a big crowd.
For CRC, victory means defending the prestigious Cup which they won last year, while for Timuran SC, who bagged the Super League crown last month, are in a good position to complete a grand double.
In the semi-final clash at the Polo Ground on Tuesday, Timuran SC were stretched to the line by the Butterfly Recreation Club.
They, however, managed a 2-1 finish to be assured of their place in the final.
In that clash, Timuran SC got off on a sure footing to emerge the early aggressors.
In the 28th minute, Timuran SC skipper Ang Choon Sai nodded home a well-measured floater by Ooi Yong Zheng from the corner flag.
Looking for the equaliser, Butterfly RC hitman Tan Cheang Cheng rocked the framework of the Timuran goal in the 46th minute and the latter quickly retaliated.
Yong Zheng latched on to a loose ball to crush home Timuran’s second goal with a thunderous kick from the top of the box in the 47th minute.
Butterfly RC refused to throw in the towel and it was almost at the end of the match that they were finally rewarded.
Butterfly’s Kang Khe Len managed a chipped shot which dipped into Timuran’s goal in the 69th minute. But it proved to be a goal too late, with the final whistle going off almost immediately.
The battle on the adjacent pitch between CRC and Inpro SC was no different, with both teams giving their best. The intense competition resulted in both teams being reduced to just 10 men just after 20 minutes of the heated contest.
Both CRC’s Khoo Ting Siang and Inpro’s Chan Huang Ping were seen trading blows after a scuffle had ensued outside the Inpro goal, forcing the man in black to dig into his back pocket to give both players the marching orders.
The inspired CRC, however, produced a performance worthy of a 3-0 win.
Attacking midfielder Tan Yap Poay struck with venom to put the club in the lead just two minutes after the unfortunate incident.
In the second half, central defender Roy Choong Hon Hui bolted home a free kick from outside the box in the 42nd minute to put CRC in a comfortable position.
Inpro’s Cup dreams were dead and buried when Soon Beng Chye delivered the third blow by tucking home from close range on the stroke of full time to enable CRC to troop out with a convincing 3-0 triumph.
Semi-Finals: Chinese Recreation Club bt Inpro SC (3-0); Timuran SC bt Butterfly RC 2-1).
