Penang and Phuket to be sister cities

GEORGE TOWN and Phuket in Thailand will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of sister city status on Sept 18.

Thai ambassador to Malaysia Krit Kraichitti said the MoU would be signed in Phuket.

He said the MoU signing would renew the historical ties between the two cities.

“We can also further develop the trade and tourism sectors of both cities,” Kraichitti told a press conference at Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s office in Komtar recently.

Lim welcomed the establishment of ties between the two cities.

He said Penang and Phuket had a historical relation that dated back to the era of Thai-Chinese businessman Khaw Sim Bee.

Places which are currently sister cities with George Town include Medan in Indonesia, Adelaide (Australia), Taipei (Taiwan), Xiamen (China) and Kanagawa (Japan).
