TEMERLOH: Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB) has been requested to extend the runway in Pulau Tioman to enable bigger aircrafts to land.
State tourism and culture committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said the existing runway could only accommodate aircraft with a capacity for 50 passengers.
“If bigger aircrafts can land here, the island will receive more tourists. I’ve already informed the prime minister of this matter,” he said.
According to statistics, Pulau Tioman received 232,000 tourists last year and is expected to receive 250,000 this year.
Mohd Sharkar hoped MAB would consider the matter to help the state government attract about 11 million tourists to Pahang this year.
Last year, over 10.5 million tourists visited the state, 70 per cent of whom were domestic tourists, he said. - Bernama
