University to launch Eco Adventure Tourism Day

IN CONJUNCTION with Kuala Lumpur Car Free Day, Berjaya University College of Hospitality, School of Tourism is organising Eco Adventure Tourism (E.A.T) Day on Aug 3 at Dataran Merdeka.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib, will be launching E.A.T Day, which celebrates the “Go Green” and healthy lifestyle movement.

The event is organised by the university’s Diploma in Events Management students in collaboration with Malaysian Tropical Environment Adventure & Fellowship Society (MyLEAF).

“This will be a year-round event for the School of Tourism students together with MyLEAF,” said the Berjaya University College of Hospitality chief operating officer Mae Ho.

The E.A.T project was initiated last December as a platform to motivate positive change through meaningful engagement with youths.

The project has the vision to make outdoor activities the preferred leisure activity among this group.

There are four focus areas in the project — nature, wildlife, adventure and community.

It is hoped that the youths will be inspired to spend more time outdoors and appreciate nature as well as develop valuable interaction with their communities.

A total of 20 students are in the team and they have planned various interesting outdoor activities such as jungle trekking, roller blading and parkour to nurture an appreciation of nature and cultivate a deeper understanding of environmentally friendly practices .

Zoo Negara, Malaysian Conservation Alliance of Tigers (MYCAT), World Wildlife Fund Malaysia (WWF) and the Malaysian Environmental Sustainability Youth Movement (MESYM) will also be participating in the event to help create awareness and educate the public about the importance of nature conservation.

“We are very grateful to be a part of the going green effort by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), Department of Standards Malaysia and MyLEAF to continuously promote a healthy lifestyle and also establish the platform for eco-adventure and recreational-based activity and organisations to be certified under the best practice guidelines through accredited standards recognised worldwide.

“This project is an extension of Berjaya’s immersion methodology where students learn by doing.

“By exposing students to real events, students are able to learn through the discovery of their own experiences and link practice with theories learnt with ease.

“Students are able to acquire and practice relevant skills throughout the course of their studies,” said the Berjaya University College of Hospitality School of Tourism head Kit Thong.

Malaysian Tropical Environment Adventure & Fellowship Society secretary general Azmi Nashriby Abu Zahar added, “This project will help create a generation with self-confidence, leadership abilities, teamwork skills and a strong sense of unity.”

According to DBKL, they expect up to 3,000 people to take part in the event.
