THE Perlis Islamic Religion and Malay Custom Council (MAIPs) has set up a fund called Tabung Bara’Atuz-Zimmah or ‘t-BAZ MAIPs’ to manage non-Syariah compliant monies.
The Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, as MAIPs president, launched the fund in conjunction with the opening of the Al-Ridza Kampung Panggas Mosque in Padang Besar on Thursday.
He said the setting up of the fund was discussed by the Perlis Fatwa Committee at the state Zakat Distribution Guideline Workshop and endorsed by the second meeting of MAIPs for 2014 held recently.
Also present at the launch were Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, state Islamic Religious Affairs
and Human Resource Develop-ment Committee chairman Khairi Hasssan and state Public Infrastructure and Amenities, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Jafperi Othman.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said the fund was to serve as a medium for the community, associations or companies that wished to channel non-Syariah compliant monies
for the benefit of Muslims and to be shared with the non-Muslim community.
The non-Syariah compliant monies included those derived from interest-based financial services, gaming and betting transactions, lottery, conventional insurance schemes, sale of tobacco-based and related products, and certain entertainment activities.
He said such monies must not be for personal use but be “cleansed” by surrendering it to the Baitulmal for the funding of construction projects for the benefit of the community, building and maintenance of homes for the poor, setting up of community development centres and so on.
Contributions can be channelled to MAIPs Baitulmal via Maybank Islamic account 559021602422 or to the MAIPs counter at MAIPs Building, A2 Taman Pengkalan Asam, Jalan Tuanku Syed Putra, 01000 Kangar, Perlis. — Bernama
