On-the-spot fine for throwing trash on the ground in USJ 9 and USJ10

IF YOU litter anywhere in the commercial areas in USJ9 or USJ10, do not be surprised if you find yourself with a summons.

It is in the second phase of Subang Jaya Municipal Council’s (MPSJ) Anti Litter MPSJ 2014 campaign at the USJ Taipan commercial centre.

Offenders will be fined RM10 on the spot.

The maximum fine for littering is RM1,000 but the council decided on RM10 as a lesson to the litterbugs.

MPSJ president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi said the aim was to educate people to stop littering, more than to penalise offenders.

“Last year we issued 189 compound notices and 304 so far this year for littering. The money collected will be used for the community’s benefit,” he added.

Initially, the council put big blue bins around commercial lots but found that they were under-utilised because people were placing bulk waste next to the bins, defeating their intended purpose.

Those bins were removed and more practical ones placed outside every 10 shops.

The bright orange bins are made from polyethylene and designed to be vandal-proof. The grooves on the bin also make it harder for placing illegal stickers.

“In October last year, 100 bins were placed in SS15 followed by 40 in USJ 9 and 60 in USJ10,” said Asmawi.

He said 200 bins would be placed in the commercial areas of Bandar Puteri Puchong, USJ 1, Puchong Prima 5, BS 4 as well as Taman Sri Serdang by early May.

During the launch, a mock arrest was demonstrated to drive home the point that littering is against the law.

Asmawi said most people claim ignorance when caught.
