THIS year’s SapuraKencana Petroleum Malaysia Grand Prix Gala & Concert is set to be an evening to be remembered.
Moving away from the tradition of holding the event in a hotel ballroom, this year’s gala dinner and concert will be held in a lavishly decorated marquee tent.
Formerly, the dinner was held in hotel ballrooms such as the Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Mandarin Oriental and the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Set to be held in a specially built Grand Marquee at Plaza Petronas KLCC, the single-tier marquee which measures 20m x 45m, could sit about 550 guests.
The structure built by Asia Tents Arena, well known for erecting temporary structures in Malaysia, will be decked with champagne coloured floors and beaded wall panels to create a warm and intimate atmosphere.
Chandeliers will run through the length of the marquee and lead towards the VIP suite located at the triple deck structure called the VIP Club.
Yusoff Iwasi, the chief communication officer of the organiser Live at Work Sdn Bhd, said the construction process of all structures for the event would take over a month to complete.
The construction started on Feb 20 and is scheduled to be completed on March 19. The event will be held on March 27.
“Precision in planning and execution of construction has to be carefully scheduled and planned due to the number of structures and satellite mini structures that are built around the Plaza Petronas and Persiaran Petronas area,” he said.
Yusoff added that this year’s gala dinner was the biggest project the company had taken.
“It involves many departments, divisions from our own team, stakeholders, regulatory bodies and authorities who have been most cooperative and helpful,” he said, adding that more than 500 people were involved in the production.
The gala event is a tradition since the race was first held here in 1999, and is a platform to welcome the F1 fraternity to Kuala Lumpur and to mark the beginning of the race weekend.
Canadian music legend David Foster will perform with American Idol’s Season Two winner Ruben Studdard and Malaysian artistes Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Vince Chong, Cheryl K, Elvira Arul and Juwita Suwito during the event.
The by-invitation only SapuraKencana Petroleum Malaysia Grand Prix Gala & Concert is traditionally attended by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Raja Permaisuri Agong and the Prime Minister as well as Malaysian and international celebrities.
Not only celebrities will walk down the red carpet. Even stars of the track, who will race at the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend, will attend the glamorous event.
Also for the first time, the concert will be opened to the public.
Fans could make their way to Plaza Petronas to enjoy the concert or watch the performances from four LED screens that will be set up around KLCC.
The Tourism and Culture Ministry is the main sponsor of the gala dinner with Dialog Group Berhad as the support sponsor.
The Sepang International Circuit is the presenting sponsor of the event with SapuraKencana Petroleum being the title sponsor for the gala.
Co-sponsors include Shangri-La Hotel, Mercedes Benz, Petronas as the venue sponsor and Tiffany & Co, which is the official jeweller for the event.
