UNIVERSITI Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) students in Kampar can now learn more about Taiwanese arts and culture with an increase in the reading materials in the campus’ library.
The university had recently received 581 titles and 634 copies of books and DVDs from the Taiwan Central Library (TCL) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with it on Nov 29.
As a result of the MoU, the Taiwan Resource Centre for Chinese Studies (TRCCS) was also set up to improve the academic resources on Chinese Studies.
Utar president Prof Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik said the MoU signing ceremony and the opening of TRCCS were collaborative activities under the Spotlight Taiwan Project to promote international cultural exchanges.
“It is also to cultivate a greater interest in Taiwan culture worldwide,” he said.
The TRCCS, he said, was a timely addition to Utar’s ongoing effort to build a global resource and information platform to broaden cultural and academic exchanges.
TCL international cooperation director Dr Liao Shiow Man, who represented TCL in the signing of the MoU, hoped to heighten the co-operation with Chinese studies research institutions in various countries.
“Our resource centres have also anchored in the United States, Russia, England, Germany, Latvia and Vietnam,” she said, adding that Utar was the TRCCS’ first entry point in Malaysia.
Utar council chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office representative Lo Yu-Chung were also present at the event.
