KUCHING: The proposed Lawas Mall and state government office complex will boost the local economy when completed soon.

Both projects are undertaken jointly by Borneo Development Corporation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (BDC), a state government-linked company, and Lawas Mall Sdn Bhd, a member of Sendayan Group of Companies.

The RM90mil Lawas Mall will be the first commercial complex of its kind in Lawas. The developer is confident that it will be well received by the locals.

“Besides serving to enhance and diversify the economic activities in Lawas, the project will also provide new employment opportunities locally,” it said in a statement.

The projects were launched by Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri visit to Lawas recently.

The proposed mall will be sited within the vicinity of the Lawas Town Square and Hotel Seri Malaysia, overlooking the Lawas River.

The three-storey complex will house a supermarket and department store as well as 132 commercial lots.

A food court will be located on the third floor and ample parking spaces will be provided on the ground and first floor.

The mall’s gross floor area is 11,750 square metres while the net commercial space is estimated to be 6,600 square metres.

All 132 commercial lots are for sale and the response has been encouraging from the local business community.

The lots for the supermarket, department store and food court will be retained by the developer.

The construction of the mall is expected to take 30 months.

Meanwhile, the 15-storey government complex will house government departments and agencies.

It will cost RM120mil and have a gross floor area of 29,750 square metres.
