TO beef up security in their area, a group of residents of USJ 2, Subang Jaya, have set up a neighbourhood patrol team.
About 15 residents have made it their responsibility to patrol the streets and have been doing so for a year.
“On average, we patrol the neighbourhood once a week and we are now heading into our 66th night of patrol,” said USJ 2 Residents Association vice-chairman in charge of safety Ricky Yeoh.
The night patrol team receives good support from the police.
“They join us in our patrols once in a while and we try to keep them informed,” he said.
Patrols are conducted using the residents’ own vehicles and each patrol sees three cars making their rounds in USJ 2.
“Each vehicle is given a few rows to patrol,” the association’s committee member Rican Lim said.
During patrols, the teams keep in touch with one another using walkie-talkies.
The night patrol team acts as the eyes and ears of the police, too.
“Our area is not gated, so we will continue patrolling to help deter crime,” said Lim.
The patrols are supported by the association.
Other than their own team, another group under the voluntary patrol unit of Subang Jaya also makes its rounds at least once a week during the day in USJ2.
Yeoh expressed disappointment that out of 2,000 residents, only 600 were members of the USJ 2 Residents Association who were paying security fees.
“That is just enough for the eight guards that we have,” Yeoh said, adding that there were five entrances into USJ 2 and only three had security booths.
To provide better security, the RA hopes that non-members will come forward to support measures to create a safer environment for all.
“We are hoping all residents will become members of the association and fund the security of USJ 2.
“If we can rope in more people to pay, we can provide better security,” added Yeoh.
