NEVER in her wildest dreams did Carey Ng imagine she would become a beauty queen and represent Malaysia in the Miss Universe 2013 beauty pageant.
The KL-born beauty, who is also an architecture graduate from the University of Nottingham, Britain, admits that when she decided to participate in Miss Universe Malaysia 2013, winning the crown was not her aim.
“After completing my studies, I wanted to do something different and challenging before starting my career, and that is how I landed in the pageant.
“Since I joined it purely for fun, when I heard my name being announced as the winner, I was shocked. I never thought I would win and it took some time for reality to sink in,” she said.
Ng, who represented her state in gymnastics as a student, admitted that she used to be a very shy person.
She said participating in the beauty contest had helped build her confidence and self-esteem.
“It’s actually a blessing in disguise because prior to my win, I used to shy away from cameras and would not mix around much. I preferred to keep to myself,” revealed the beauty, who turns 25 in November.
“I have managed to overcome my fear of public speaking and now I am able to deliver a speech with greater confidence,” she said.
Ng, who won four subsidiary titles, including Miss Best Body, said she did not go on a strict diet prior to the competition.
“My personal trainer ensured I was in good shape and had the required stamina.”
A tom yam and curry mee lover, she found it hard at first to resist eating her favourite dishes during the competition.
However, Ng realised later that she could still enjoy her nasi lemak and stay healthy at the same time.
“Eat what you like but in moderation and don’t over-indulge. Exercise is very important as well because it helps keep you in good shape,” she added.
With the Miss Universe pageant round the corner, Carey admitted the preparations are tough.
“I have to ensure that I am ready because I am not just representing myself, but the country as well.”
“I am also reading materials on Malaysia’s culture, heritage and tourist spots so I can promote our country’s cultural diversity to the rest of the world.”
Ng said she aimed to take on more charity projects that help underprivileged children.
“I adore children and being able to do something for them will be amazing.”
Despite her packed schedule, Ng makes it a point to have some “me” time by reading a book or catching up with close friends.
“I make sure I spend more time with my family because as the competition draws close, free time would be hard to come by.”
Citing Gwen Stefani and Audrey Hepburn as her favourite fashion icons, Ng plans to continue her studies and put her degree to use.
“Architecture is still my passion and hopefully if everything goes well, I would love to open my own architect firm in the near future.”
