Indian restaurant and cultural association celebrate CNY

TO CELEBRATE Chinese New Year, Vishal Food and Catering Sdn Bhd and the Malaysian Indian Art and Culture Association (Perkesim) tossed yee sang at Vishal restaurant in Jalan Scott, Brickfields recently.

Perkesim adviser Asha Thiagarajan said it was held to foster unity and promote the 1Malaysia concept.

The association offers classes in traditional dances such as bharathanatyam, sangeetham, carnatic music, traditional musical instruments, writing and conversation for adults and children as well as Indian martial art silambam.

At the event, students learning Chinese, impressed the crowd by singing Chinese songs.

Perkesim president and founder P. Nagarajan, 53, said the inclusion of Malay and Chinese language courses was to reflect the Indian society in Malaysia who lived alongside many other races.

“Though it is an Indian culture association, we take into account the cultures around us and accept students from all races,” he said.

The association has branches in Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Penang and Perak.
